Q&A: Cheap Travel in New Zealand?

Question by Rachiiroo: Cheap Travel in New Zealand?
my friend and i are planning to go backpacking in New Zealand over the summer. we want to do it fairly cheaply as we will be starting uni next year. we are planning to use public transport, especially by train but we can’t find a whole lot of detail regarding train travel, what is new zealand’s main train network? are there any other cheap methods of transport (both my friend and i will be unable to drive)? or any other travel tips? Also what are the best places to go and see in New Zealand, we plan on traveling around for about a month.

hey guys sorry but our train networks arnt as huge and all over the country as some people expect, but they do run from auckland to wellington and back and in some cities around the country and of course the gorgeous alpine/ overlander train in the south island. i would definately recommend going around by bus, the liners are nice and comfy and they go into every city in the country so that wont cause any problems. The south island would definately have to be a major point to our tourist attraction such as the glaciers, queenstown for major adrenalin buzzes and the mountain ranges, there is just too much stuff happening down there hahaha. the north island is more relaxed and absolutely teeming with beaches and alsorts. i am not sure what else to add hahaha but ill add more when it comes to mind. have fun with your travels!!!!
