I think the answer is you have to rely on your own research.

Cheapest flights depend on your flexibility – if you are more flexible with the time and airlines i.e. you don’t mind flying 2 a.m in the morning – or changing your flights to take advantage of certain package, you’ll have a better chance to get the price you want.

To get the cheapest price, you also need to book as early as possible. Cheapest days are Tuesday and Wednesday.

The rule of thumb is to always check at least 2 major reservation sites and 1 specialty site, so you can compare.

The major ones are Travelocity and Expedia.

The example of specialty sites are priceline, lastminute, cheaptickets or some of the examples above.

With priceline, they have a unique bidding system where you get to “name your own price.” Allow some time for them to scan their system. If there is no match, your bid may not be accepted. You might need to switch your time and schedule if there is a match to your price. In short, if you’ve got flexibility, priceline is worth checking out.

Lastly, if you want some surprises, check out your trusted airline website. They may run discounts that are not shared through any of the above websites. Southwest, AirTran and Frontier are good options.

    In summary,
1- Be flexible and book way in advance
2 – Check at least 2 major sites and 1 specialty site
    3 – Check airline websites

sidestep will give you some idea as to who is in the running for the best price but then go right to that airlines web site, i found you actually do better booking right with the airline itself for price

The different travel websites should be pretty close in price and not be that far off otherwise everyone would flock to that one site. You can go to http://www.kayak.com as it compares multiple travel websites and gives you the ticket prices. My recommendation is that you start off with the airline’s own website as it may have specials that the travel websites do not have.
